In Ecuador, one does not think climatically in terms of cardinal points such as north and south, but in terms of altitude metres. Life here takes place between sea level and 4000 metres altitude. Dense tropical rainforest and sparse mountainous vegetation lie right next to each other, connected by endless serpentines that the buses climb and descend. The mountains here are alive, sometimes smoking and spitting ashes – a chain of active volcanoes.
